Salesman A: "This powerful model has 3 special fancy-hydro-power-system pumps that put out a total of 18 amazing peak horsepower!! It beats all the competition"....
Salesman B: "Our 1.65 horsepower pump is so well designed that we don't need as much horsepower as the competition...why waste horse power that you don't need"...." our customers don't want to be blown out their seats...they want to enjoy their time in the hot tub."...."we've never had a customer complain about the horsepower before, ever!"
Below is a 6.7 continuous horsepower spa motor. It is a modern engineering marvel that is found only on high performance spas.

This is a
56
frame 6.7 Continuous HP Motor.
Note the "CONT" on the label. Also note the 6.7 after HP. Also note
the 56 after the "FR". Ask your salesman the difference between his
1.65 HP motor and a 6.7 HP motor.Reality:
"Brake Horsepower" is presented to the hot tub shopper to make the pump seem stronger than it actually is. "Brake horsepower" is not the actual horsepower of the motor. Unless the sales person specifically announces that he is talking about "continuous horsepower", he is talking about what is called "brake horsepower or BHP", also known as "marketing horsepower" or "peak" HP. A typical four "brake" horsepower motor is actually about 2.5 continuous horsepower motor. Make sure your are comparing "Continuous" HP to Continuous HP so you can see an objective comparison.
Good Spa Design:
Haven pump horsepower is always designated as continuous horsepower. Haven's horse power is almost always greater than the competition. While it is important to have some "real" horsepower behind the pumps, a "clean" plumbing design is just as important. Clean plumbing means using the fewest 90 degree turns and the largest diameter pipes possible on the suction side to provide least resistance, least turbulence and maximum flow through the plumbing system. Haven's motors run in the "sweet spot"... that is, the RPM and optimum pump flow that they were engineered for. Both the pump and the impeller size are carefully selected and matched to the performance of the motor as well as the number and size of the jets.
