Factual Hot tub and Spa Information is often hard to come by. Websites make every spa seem like the best of the best. Manufacturers claim exclusive patented features. The spa sales presentation is carefully scripted by the sales gurus. The local hot tub salesman must follow the script. The presentation is designed to generate a profitable sale. Facts are few, the claims are unverifiable and "sales logic" abounds. Sales logic similar to this is used: " If the largest spa companies make them this way..... it must be the best way to make them!". 0r "We sell more spas than all the others put together. That proves we are the best."

Become an Informed Spa Shopper:
The spa salesmen at the local Hawaii home shows at the Blaisdale Center are often brought in from the mainland just for the shows. A guy from California representing a smaller hot tub company(Coleman) gave me a very good presentation last year. He was logical and coherent and I learned all about his spa.

But, some of salesmen's claims are completely ridiculous. For example, at a different booth I was told, by another guy from California, that his spas(Jacuzzi) were designed to be a precision medical device and they were used in hospitals as a treatment. ( I asked "Does your spa have a blower?..." Ooooh Nooo!, the hospitals didn't want them, so we took the blowers out.") Having worked in hospitals for 25 years, I knew it wasn't true. I've never seen a hot tub in a hospital. Where do they come up with this stuff? It didn't even sound believable. But, this was one of his primary selling points.

Another guy from California (is there a pattern here?) representing a 3rd spa company (Sundance) sat me down at a desk first. I think I was being "pre-qualified" before the guy would tell me about his spas. So I answered the questions honestly as I was going to buy a spa. I left out the fact that I already knew I was going to buy a Haven spa. Really, I would have been outraged if I was a casual shopper. This was a home show! Lots of casual foot traffic, people who just want to look, ask questions and learn about the products. The guy told me the number one reason to buy his spa model was because of "accu-pressure jets". He answered my questions according to the "script" and when that was done...I was "handed off" to a "closer" to wrap up the deal. I didn't like the high pressure sales approach. "Oh, just sign here..." I didn't really buy the accu-pressure jet stuff either. (How can they put a jet in a spa and know it will hit every size and shape of customer in just the right spot?) So I made an excuse and left.

Try it yourself. Go to the home show or the local hot tub showrooms and talk to the spa dealers. Then, ask them about diverter valves.
Be prepared to be entertained as the sales person literally runs around the demo spa turning these valves in order to show you the jets in one seat. Be amused by their explaination as to why flipping dirverter valves is good. Ask about full foam insulation, filtering, water care and ask "Why is your spa better than the others?"

We are simply advocating consumer education. A consumer must know something about the product to make an informed choice. We all know some cars are better built and last longer than others. Safety ratings? Fuel economy? Resale value? There are clear differences between cars which many informed consumers understand. There are clear differences between spas too. To the uninformed spa shopper it is difficult to tell a well engineered spa from a cheaply made high profit margin spa.

A good starting point in learning about spas is reading the spa articles on this web site. I cover all the basics here, but, Jim Arjuna's Spa Specialist web site is packed full of articles and information.
www.spaspecialist.com There is enough spa information there to keep you up all night reading. Spend a little time there and you will learn enough to make a much more informed purchase. Some of Jim's articles are on this web site. The articles are based on engineering concepts and Jim's years of hands on repair experience. Ask questions...read...ask questions! Comparison shopping is fair!

There are several spa sellers here in Hawaii. The owners are local and not from Calif. I have talked with some of them. I believe that they are honest and ethical business people. We in Hawaii are fortunate to have such straight forward business people here in our community. I believe that if you purchase a spa from any of them you will probably have a good experience. This is because a hot tub is a satisfying addition to your life. You will be convinced initially that your money was well spent. It is not my intent to put down a Brand X spa company or dealer. We honestly believe our Haven Spas are better values based on
real product differences. We invite you to learn about spas and draw your own conclusions.
These are Haven high quality hot tubs and spas that are available in Hawaii.
